Local 183 is deeply saddened by the recent tragedy that has set upon the people of Brazil.  The series of floods and mudslides that has taken place in January 2011, affecting several towns of the Mountainous Region in the Brazilian State of Rio de Janeiro, is a travesty of enormous proportions and we the Members, Officers and Staff of LIUNA Local 183 offer our support and prayers as the people of the affected areas struggle to survive.

The effects of this disaster are very significant; as casualties have occurred in the cities of Teresopolis, Nova Friburgo, Petropolis, Sumidouro and Sao Jose do Vale do Rio Preto.  To the people of these towns, we extend our hands and hearts in support so that they may one day rebuild their lives and move forward.   The floods have caused at least 635 deaths so far, including 269 in Teresopolis.  The combination of floods, mudslides and landslides in Rio de Janeiro are the worst weather-related natural disaster in Brazilian history.

Like the tragedies in Haiti, Chile and Madeira, the pain is felt in our families and the extended families of our members here in Toronto who were born in Brazil or have family still residing there.  To those affected, we extend our deepest condolences, sympathies and heartfelt wishes of good will and hope.  Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families as they struggle to get their lives back in order.  LIUNA is built on the bonds of brotherhood and strength in numbers.  At times like these, it is our collective efforts that make a difference.  We will band together with the Brazilian Community in Toronto to do what we can to lessen the burden of these trying times.
